WELCOME

The term "frigate" referred to ships smaller and faster than a normal ship-of-the-line and they were used for patrolling or escort work. Since there were no long distance communications in the 18th century,  frigates were also used as messengers between fleets because of their ability to evade the enemy. In more modern times, frigates 
evolved very quickly due to the rapid changes in electronic warfare. This section traces this evolution through the many classes listed.
