After working up in home waters the 27th Destroyer Flotilla was intended for service in the Eastern and British Pacific Fleets. However, Kempenfelt went to the Mediterranean for the Anzio operation in January 1944, returning for the Normandy invasion in June. Wakeful and Wizard took part in carrier raids against the Norwegian shipping routes in may 1944 but in June Wizard was very badly damaged by an explosion of her own depth charges and spent until the end of April 1945 under repair. 

Kempenfelt saw service in Artic convoys in August 1944 but by November all, except Wizard, were with the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean. In January the flotilla moved to the Pacific and spent the remainder of the war with the British Pacific Fleet.
